画家・庄司朝美による一年間の滞在記。
帝国の度重なる支配を受け、複雑で困難な歴史を乗り越えてきたコーカサス南麓の小国であり、独自の言語や文化を守り続けてきたカオティックな新興国、ジョージア。 2022年、隣国ウクライナではロシアの実質的な武力侵攻が始まり、人々が揺れ動くジョージアの地に滞在することになった画家は何を思い、何を描いたのか――。

五島記念文化賞にて美術新人賞を受賞し、その渡航滞在先でウェブ版「美術手帖」に宛てて執筆された連載エッセイを英語・ジョージア語に対訳。相反する要素や像を窓外の景色と重ね合わせるようにガラスに描く、作家の《Window Painting》シリーズの図版や現地での写真を収録。書き下ろしの作家テキストや挿絵も掲載する。

「絵画を見る」経験の中で生まれる身体イメージや感覚を探究し、半透明のアクリル板やキャンヴァスなどを主な支持体とした作品を発表している。近年の主な展示に「栄養、幽霊のために」（LC Queisser、トビリシ）、「花の瞬間」（LINSEED、上海）「MOT アニュアル2024こうふくのしま」（東京都現代美術館）、「10 月、から騒ぎ」（Semiose、パリ）、「足のない歩行」（gallery21yo-j）、「Body, Love, Gender」（Gana Art Center、ソウル）、「顕神の夢」（川崎市岡本太郎美術館、神奈川、ほか巡回）など。

透明な窓に描かれた庄司朝美さんの絵は、ガラスの向こうの平凡な景色と神秘的な像が溶け合って、どこにでもありそうでどこにもないビジョンを宿して静かに浮かんでいた。長く大国の片隅にあって、独立したいまも自分たちがだれで、どこに行くのか、とまどいながら遠くを見ようとしている国の景色のように。
トレンディな現代美術でもなければ、伝統的な絵画様式でもない。そのあいだのどこか曖昧な場所で”絵を描くひと”という自分を探しながら、あるいは当たり前のように納得していた自分を見失うために、旅をした１年間の記録。それはゆっくりと、ぎこちなく、てらいもなく、一緒に向かえるどこかへ、一緒に立ち止まれるどこかへ、僕らをいざなう。

A record of one year in residence by painter Asami Shoji.

At the southern foothills of the Caucasus lies Georgia—a small nation that has endured repeated imperial rule and a complex, often difficult history, while continuing to preserve its own language and culture. A young and vibrant country marked by chaos and resilience.
In 2022, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine began, Shoji spent a year living in Georgia, a land where people’s hearts and lives were shifting. What did she think, and what did she paint, during that period?
A recipient of the Gotoh Memorial Cultural Award, Shoji documented her thoughts and experiences in a serialized essay for Bijutsu Techo Online. This volume presents those writings with English and Georgian translations, alongside photographs from her stay and reproductions from her Window Painting series—works painted directly on glass, where outer landscapes and inner contradictions merge into delicate visions. The book also features newly written texts and illustrations by the artist.

Asami Shoji explores bodily imagery and perception that arise through the act of “seeing” painting. Her practice centers on semi-transparent supports such as acrylic panels and canvas.
Recent exhibitions include: “Nutrition, for Ghosts” (LC Queisser, Tbilisi), “Moment of Flowers” (LINSEED, Shanghai), “MOT Annual 2024: on the imagined terrain” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), “October, Much Ado About Nothing” (Semiose, Paris), “a gait without foot” (gallery21yo-j, Tokyo), “Body, Love, Gender” (Gana Art Center, Seoul), "Yearning for Vision (Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki, and touring).

The images Shoji paints on transparent glass quietly merge the mundane scenery beyond the window with mysterious figures—creating visions that seem both familiar and nowhere to be found.
They evoke the landscape of a country long positioned at the margins of great powers, now independent yet still uncertain of who it is or where it is headed.

Neither a trendy form of contemporary art nor a traditional style of painting, Shoji’s work resides somewhere in between.
This book is a gentle, unguarded record of a year-long journey—one of searching for herself as a “painter,” or perhaps of losing the self she once took for granted.

It invites us, slowly and without pretense, toward a place where we might pause together, or move forward together.
