水上愛美の初作品集。
最古の砂漠の砂などを混ぜたサンドペーストを塗り重ね、神話や物語を引用した作品を描く水上愛美は、中層に描いた絵をわざと塗り潰して完全に不可視にすることで制作当初から計算したいくつものレイヤーを絵画の内部に包含させ、地層のような時間とイメージを堆積させる。それら一連の作品には不可視な過去未来も同時に存在する、多次元世界への作家の関心が現れている。

本作品集『catharsis bed』はそのような水上の作品構造を解読する手がかりともなるカタログとして制作されている。
絵画作品の表面 / 隠された中層にまつわるドローイング / 絵画の背面が全てひと繋がりの紙面に掲載されながらも、あくまで全貌は見通せないよう設計され、また作品を紐解く中尾拓哉執筆の論考も、作品の表・中・裏の構造と呼応した3層の文章として展開される。

古代から続く伝承や文学、歴史上の寓話や悲劇を引用し、時に孤独な生活者たちを描く作家は、悲哀を重ねる人類の物語を絵画平面の上に積み起こす。
絵画を観るという経験が一対一の個人的なものでしかあり得ないなかで、しかしその画面の向こうに見通せない他者や異層の物語がいくつも確かに存在しているとすることにより、私たちの想像力をさらにもう一層先の次元へと委ねさせながら、水上の作品は絵画の持つ物質的な情報可能性を増大させる。
実在不可視の物語の主人公たちは想像の中で絡み合い、そこにひとつの多元的なイメージが結ばれるとき、それは見る者の内奥にある感覚や記憶、時間と空間とが混じり合ったさらに複層的な絵画体験となる。

First catalogue of Emi Mizukami.
Emi Mizukami, who draws myths and stories by applying layers of sand paste mixed with the oldest desert sand and other materials, intentionally paints over the middle layer of the painting to make it completely invisible. Calculating from the beginning, thereby Mizukami makes several layers in her painting and depositing time and images like a geological stratum inside the painting. These series of works show the artist’s interest in a multidimensional world where the invisible past and future exist at the same time.

This catalogue “catharsis bed” provides clues to decipher the structure of Mizukami’s works.
In the book, the surface of the paintings, the drawings related to the hidden middle layer, and the behinds of the paintings are all printed on a single paper, but the entire range of pictures is designed to be unseen. Takuya Nakao’s essay, which unravels the work, also unfolds as a three-layered text that corresponds to the front, middle, and back structure of the painting.

Drawing on ancient folklore, literature, historical fables and tragedies, the artist, who sometimes depicts lonesome ordinary peoples, piles up the stories of human beings on the picture plane, layering them with sorrow.
While the experience of appreciating a painting can only be a one-on-one personal one, Mizukami’s works increase the material informational potential of the painting by assuming that there are certainly many stories of others and different layers which we cannot see beyond the picture plane, letting our imagination go to a further dimension.
The protagonists of the invisible real stories intertwine in the imagination, and when a multifaceted image is created there, it becomes more multilayered experience of appreciating paintings that blends the viewer’s innermost senses, memories, time and space.
